A 17 year-old African American young man was shot and killed last month in his gated community in Florida by a white neighborhood watch captain who’d found him to be “suspicious.” Trayvon Martin had taken a break from watching the NBA All Star Game to walk to a convenience store and pick up some snacks for himself and his 13 year-old brother, Chad.

Neighborhood Watch captain George Zimmerman saw Martin on his way home and called 911 to report a suspicious person. But rather than await the arrival of the police, Zimmerman decided to take action himself. The resulting confrontation ended in an innocent, African American young man dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. Trayvon Martin’s family is calling for Zimmerman’s arrest.

“‘What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles,’ Crump said. ‘A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad.’ Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community’s newsletter. Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family’s request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.”

Its ridiculous and offensive that we are still having this debate over marriage equality.

Personally being in an interracial relationship, years ago I would not be able to walk down the street with my partner and be devoid of criticism and humiliation. Regardless of your personal views on what a relationship looks like to you, I am happy with my boyfriend who is of a different race. Many may still have an issue with that but it is my right as an American to love who I want to love, to eat what I want to eat, to dress the way I want to dress.

This is something that everyone should be passionate about, just like SOPA. How dare the government, state or federal, say they have the right to rule on civil rights issues. Equality is equal treatment for EVERYONE! If the definition has changed then we must rewrite our history books. Isn’t it embarrassing that countries all over the globe can get over marriage equality but Americans are stuck in the stone ages. Since when do we want to be the country that segregates and demeans a talented, loving segment of our population.

I don’t care what your beliefs are but if you are a minority, your rights were once denied. If you are not part of the 1%, you are financially handicapped by the tax laws. How can you as one minority, sit and deny rights to another group???

Treat those as you would wish to be treated, give love to get love, and respect your neighbors by allowing them to be protected by the same marriage laws as you.
